Jesus is Greater
Song:
Greater by Mercy Me
Scripture:
1 John 4:1-6
1) What are we supposed to do to spirits we come across? Why? How does this apply to today's day and age?
2) How does John address his audience in verse 4? Why is this comforting?
3) Who is God greater than? Why is this important to remember?
So many good messages from so many verses in this song! It was hard to pick which direction to go. In fact, I have been meaning to do a blog post on this song for months, but I couldn’t decide which part of the song to address. That debate was settled during my Spiritual Warfare class I took through my church. The teacher, in answering a question, cited 1 John 4:4. The lyrics from this song immediately popped into my head, and sure enough, this song directly quotes that verse. Since the message of this song, and the music is upbeat, I didn’t automatically think it was about spiritual warfare, but listen closely, and you’ll notice mental strongholds are addressed. The fact is that we are mentally attacked by Satan. He wants to pull us away from Jesus. One way he tries? He manipulates thoughts. Shame, doubt, fear, pain, anger, guilt, suicidal thoughts, unworthiness: none of these messages come from Jesus. The great news? If we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we have the power of Jesus living inside of us through the Holy Spirit. And Jesus is greater than those voices. He is greater than those who put us down. He is greater than our daily battles. He is greater than Satan. Jesus. Is. Greater. And He loves you, cares about you, and redeems you. That is the best news! When you find yourself in a spiritual battle, rely on the most powerful ally you can ask for: Jesus Christ.
Prayer:
Dear Almighty Father,
You are the God who can part seas, send fire from heaven, and resurrect the dead. Today I am struggling with the stronghold of _________________. I can’t battle this successfully on my own. Please give me the power to overcome. Thank you for your unconditional love and forgiveness.
Amen
